▲FINALLY MICHIGAN SINGLE BUSINESS TAX (MBT) FORMS AVAILABLE
The Michigan Single Business Tax (SBT) was replaced by the MBT as of January 1, 2008. Michigan business tax (MBT) forms have finally been released in their final form with instructions. They are available on the Michigan Department of Treasury's web site. The filing deadline for all returns, except for insurance companies, including fiscal-year filers with a fiscal year ending in 2008, has been extended to April 30, 2009, for the first year of filing MBT returns. The deadline for filing an insurance company return is March 1, 2009.
Some companies with fiscal years ending in 2008, have been waiting months for the release of the forms. For example, for a company with a March 31, 2008 year end, it's MBT return was originally due on July 31, 2008.
This extension of time to file the return did not extend the time to file estimated tax payments. The estimated MBT payments have been due as originally scheduled during this time of extension. The first 3 estimated payments are due on the 15th day (not the end of the month as under the SBT) of the 4th, 7th, and 10th month of your fiscal year. The 4th payment is due by the 15th day of the month after the end of your fiscal year. For calendar year 2008 taxpayers, your estimated tax payments were due April 15, 2008, July 15, 2008, October 15, 2008 and January 15, 2009
▲ FOCUS ON FRAUD: COMMON MYTHS ABOUT FRAUD From the desk of Marty Grausam, CPA, CFE, CISA
Myth: Most people will not commit fraud.
.. probably the biggest misconception
.. perpetrators come from all walks of life
.. it is a fact of life; some people lie, cheat and steal
Myth: Frauds are not significant.
.. there are no small frauds, only ones that have had insufficient time to grow
.. once someone starts, they usually do not stop
Myth: Most fraud goes undetected.
.. often very simple, not complex methods
.. as the amounts get bigger the perpetrator gets careless about concealment
Myth: Fraud is usually well concealed.
.. when the suspect is known, the result is usually easy
.. must know cash received versus cash deposited
Myth: Prosecuting fraud perpetrators deters others.
.. reduces individual recidivism, but may not deter others
.. an aggressive position on prosecution is not necessarily adequate protection from fraud
If you have any questions about fraud, please call our office. We will be happy to respond.
Reasons Why You May Want or Need Business Valuation in 2009
Reason 1 of 9 - Martial Dissolution (Divorce)
Your business is typically your largest joint marital asset and the most complex to value. A business valuation will either be court appointed or voluntarily engaged, to facilitate a friendly and fair distribution settlement.
Pleas contact Les Prangley at (616)774-9004 or lprangley@pmcpa.com for all your Business Valuation needs!
See next week for Reason 2 of 9!
