1.  Same-Day Option Available for Deposits of Federal Employment Taxes

Employers can make same-day deposits of federal employment taxes using the IRS's Electronic Tax Application (ETA) according to Laurie Tuzynski, IRS Program Manager for Service-Wide Penalties.

Many employers deposit federal employment taxes using the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS).  Taxpayers must initiate the transaction at least one business day before the date the deposit is due for the deposit to be made on time.  However, employers that fail to initiate a deposit transaction on EFTPS at least one business day before the deposit due date can still make a timely deposit by using ETA.  An employer can initiate the transaction and have the funds transferred from its financial institution the same day.

"Enrollment in EFTPS automatically enrolls you in ETA," according to Tuzynski.  An employer that is not enrolled in EFTPS can use ETA, but it may need special assistance from its financial institution to complete the transaction, she added.

2.  Focus on Fraud:  Fear Factor - Risk of Detention Dampens Employees' Ferver for Fraud - Part 3 Let Fear Deter

Too often, companies worried about the effects of adverse publicity wrap up their fraud investigations with only threats and beefed-up damage control efforts.  That does little to convince would-be-fraudsters that their activities will bring more pain than gain.  In fact, it serves to demonstrate that your company basically turns a blind eye to crime – and that employees can steal with impunity.

Fraud is a risk that can have catastrophic consequences.  Send a loud and clear message that fraud will be detected and punished, and you may find you’ve diminished your risk significantly.

3.  Tech Tip Weekly:  When Your Computer is Frozen Solid

Every once in a while, Windows seemingly wanders off, you're left looking at a computer that does nothing. None of the computer's lights blink. Panicked clicks don't do anything. Pressing every key on the keyboard doesn't do anything or worse yet, the computer starts to beep at every key press.

When nothing on-screen moves (except sometimes the mouse pointer), the computer is frozen up solid. Try the following approaches, in the following order, to correct the problem:

  • Press Esc twice. This action usually doesn't work but give it a shot anyway.
  • Press Ctrl, Alt, and Delete all at the same time. If you're lucky, the Task Manager appears with the message that you discovered an unresponsive application. The Task Manager lists the names of currently running programs, including the one that's not responding. Click the name of the program that's causing the mess and then click the End Process button. You lose any unsaved work in that program, but you should be used to that! If that still doesn't do the trick, click the Task Manager's Shut Down menu and choose Restart.
  • If the preceding approaches don't work, push the computer's reset button, you should check you computer’s user manual.
  • If not even the reset button works (and some computers don't even have reset buttons anymore), turn the computer off by pushing its power button. (If that merely brings up the Turn Off the Computer menu, choose Restart, and your computer should restart.)
  • When nothing else works, if you press in the computer's off button long enough, it will eventually stop resisting and turn off.
